Brechin travelled down to Palmerston for the 2nd league match after being harshly beaten by Hamilton last week-end due to a last minute goal. However, during mid-week they were deservedly beaten, although it took Partick 120 minutes and a penalty shootout to see of a poor Brechin side in the first round of the CIS Insurance Cup.
Brechin started poorly and Queens had a few early chances. First of all prolific goalscorer David McNiven came close with a low shot but it was comfortably saved by Craig Nelson. Minutes later left back Tommy English let fly from 30 yards but it was superbly tipped over by Craig Nelson, although it appeared to be sailing over the bar.
Tommy English had another effort from long range but this time the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar, before Queens had 2 glorious chances to take the lead. First of all a long ball from the Queens defence evaded all of the City defenders which saw Derek Lyle go through on goal, and with just Nelson to beat dragged his effort wide of the goal. Secondly, poor communication between City defenders saw Steve Bowey close in on goal, only to be denied by the excellent Craig Nelson. Brechin's only chance of the half came courtesy of a free kick just outside the box, which was hammered well over the bar by Gary Bollan.
Into the second half Queens continued to dominate but the Brechin defence held firm. There was a handball appeal inside the box but it was clearly ball to hand rather than hand to ball. Alex Burns had 3 excellent chances to net a winner for City at the death. First of all he struck the ball straight at Barnard from 10 yards out before slicing an effort wide when he only had the keeper to beat. The best chance of the game then fell to Burns in the dying minutes, Darren Smith flighted the ball into the box which was headed into the path of Burns, who weakly headed into the arms of the grateful Barnard.
